The books is *wonderful*! In the kingdom of Nogard there are the meat-eating dragons, and then there's Herb who is a vegetarian. The knights come to the forest to round up the meat eaters but get Herb instead, and lock him in a dungeon. The leader of the meat-eaters, named Meathook, comes to Herb and says he will free him if only he'd eat a chunk of meat he brought...Herb says, " I don't see it your way, so I'll take my chances. I don't ask you to stop eating meat, so why do you ask me to stop eating vegetables?" The next day as the knights bring Herb out to walk the plank it is a little girl that comes to his rescue explaining that he would never harm anyone. (I like this part too because it is a little girl standing up to the whole kingdom for what she believes, and she IS believed) Then Meathook is captured and the townspeople suggest that he be fed to the gators, but the king rises and says "Meathook I give you a choice. I will not ask you to change your eating habits. It is your rightful choice to eat what you will. But in exchange for sparing your life, I ask that you and your dragon brothers stop feasting on my people." The king then releases him to expect an answer the next day. One of the dragons comments "It's not like we have to become vegetarians like Herb. We just have to stop eating people." The book ends, "...Herb, the vegetarian dragon, brought peace to the forest of Nogard, where dragons and people, meat-eaters and vegetarians, live together in peace and harmony."
