This is an antique darning egg Linda, I actually haven't seen any in shops in a long time. The reason you use one is so when darning (or weaving) a hole in a sock, you don't get a seam or ridge. The egg helps the sock lay flat as you work on it. Here is an article on how to use it. frugalliving.about.com/c/ht/00/07/How_Darn_Sock0962933254.htm

Wow, it looks like a cross between an emu egg and a maraka. It is lovely Deed. I have a mushroom shaped wooden one, I don't think I have actually used it, maybe dh has.

A quilter's quarter and one of those wonderful felt-tip pens with disappearing ink (yes, I've forgotten what it's called!) - just in case!
Also more thread please, in cream and red and pink and burgundy and shades of blue and green, some yellow, also, most importantly, a reel of that thick thread in the yellow-y color of the stitiching on denim. (I always have to take up the hems of my jeans - leave it out if the bride-to-be is tall)
I'd love one of your darning eggs!
