I remember ringing NY state once and asking for my husband at the hotel. I said the second letter E and they kept saying A, and the more I tried to be clear on the sound the worse it got. I wasn't getting anywhere and it was very expensive. The next week he was in Singapore, which has Americans too, and the guy who presumably was native to Singapore did the same thing.
So you may have trouble understanding me, but Australians can understand American accent very well.

Lynn, I am a Californian indeed. Born in what was then the Cedars of Lebanon hospital in East Hollywood.
My dh spent his whole life making excuses about not going overseas until last year when he was given the chance to go to the United Kingdom with a cricket club. They were going for 3 weeks to play cricket against various local sides. He talked a lot about going, how wonderful it would be, but kept backing out until I called him at work and said, right I've got the airline website in front of me, here's the ticket ready to be booked, it's on the flight with one of the men you know, is it yes or no? He finally said yes, and I hit send, so that was it.
He had a wonderful time, lynn, touring through England and Wales. It was perfect for a first time traveller to be with a group of people, most of whom he knew, and to have everything booked and organized by more experienced travellers.
It was expensive but he has some wonderful memories which will last forever.
(mind you I have no intention of getting on a plane for that long!!)

My DH went on his first trip with a person from work and he helped him to drive on the other side of the road!

Thanks for the quiz BR, here are my results:
45% General American English 35% Yankee 15% Upper Midwestern 5% Dixie 0% Midwestern
I guess I have an accent too as I am sure most of us do in the states, just depends on where you are from.
I have spoken to Carolyn and I don't think she has an accent at all. LOL
I would love to hear yours too BR! ;D

I love my home country of New Zealand and can't wait to get back there!! Haven't been there for 6 years and even though I am half British (father born in Wales, but to English parents) and there are some fantastic places to visit here (and it is a good base for travelling to Europe) I still think "there's no place like home"!

Your right rosebee, there is no place like home. I have been in KY for almost 10 years and still say, *My Michigan*. It will always be home.
Good to see you posting. !!
