The Monarchs are so pretty. We get them all over our butterfly bushes when they come to town!! Some years they cover the entire bush. I love watching butterflies.
The swan plant is so unique. I have never seen anything like it in the states?
I imagine your children enjoy them br.

I was amazed about how many butterflies you get Car.
Today was exciting, we found 8-10 large catapillars like the ones on the link on our swan plant. DH was really excited. DS17 took a great photo of one, it was fun.

Very unusual plants for sure. I love all of them but the mouse plant is kind of spooky to me. LOL

My grandmother has one of these plants at her house (in New Zealand) and over there it is called milkweed. Whenever we visited her we would see different stages of the butterflies life cycle. These butterflies are quite rare and the poisonous milkweed is the only plant they feed on. There is a campaign to save them: www.learner.org/jnorth/sm/aboutmbsf.htmlSo get out in your garden and plant some milkweeds to provide food and homes for these beautiful butterflies! I am definitely getting one (when I move back home that is) I just love the stripey caterpillars and the bright butterflies! Seeds are at: www.milkweedfarm.com/(they also sell Alpacas - interesting combination!)

When I started this thread I noticed alot of NZ sites for the plant. We also had a our friends over from NZ this year and the lady noticed my plant. I got mine at a stall up the street, our town is like that. One had a swan on it, the others didn't or I wouldn't have know what it was, a swan or something that I recognised. They do come up in the garden quite easily, we are letting another one grow now.
Off to check your links.

Wow, great link rosebee, milkweeds in Virginia. They have a slightly different flower, but obviously the butterflies love them just the same!!

Milkweed here is just that. A weed. But it does have a lovely bloom on it. Can't wait to see the lifecycle pics br. Last year we watched a caterpillar spin his cocoon and emerge as a lovely butterfly. It was awesome.
