I have done this before in the past. In California we had alot of water restrictions. Here though we live on the edge of the Seine. I have a pump in the garden that pumps the water out of the river to water everything. I think it is the same cause you have all those boats dumping chemicals into the water. Our trees are really healthy though. I count this as a blessing cause our water bill for one month is 150 euros.

I grew up with a pump shed near our garden gate that pumped out of the creek near the back fence. I loved it.
I love rivers too. We lived in a river valley.
