Golden Syrup Dumplings
Rub 1 tablespoon of butter into 1 cup of Self Raising flour. Beat 1 egg with a little milk and add to flour mixture to make a scone or biscuit dough. I use a table knife. Then put any crumbs into a hole in the dough then squish. I put enough milk to make most of the flour work in then work on the rest as above.
Make dough ball roughly into a square and cut a grid to make 9 squares. These are your dumplings.
Syrup: 1 cup water 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoon Golden Syrup
Get a pot (medium i.e. kettle or saucepan) and put the syrup into it. I don't think it was mixed or anything when dd made it. Turn stove on to medium until boiling, turn to low. Carefully lower dumplings into boiling syrup. I am not sure if they shaped them into balls. Put on lid and start timer. Cook in boiling syrup for 20 minutes with lid on.
Not sure if this is a metric recipe, I'd say not. It is a family recipe. It works OK as a metric recipe as well. Some recipes include lemon juice. This family recipe wasn't too sweet.
Our daughter (with help) made these this week after visiting her friend in the country. Her friend's grandma brought them around for dessert. They are a classic. Serve with pouring cream.
