When It Comes To Self Esteem You Never Stop Growing
By Graham Hunt Platinum Quality Author
Despite what some people might say, self-esteem is not completely developed in childhood. It grows as you grow. It matures as you mature. It follows, therefore that what was an appropriate level of self-esteem say, ten years ago, will not necessarily be an appropriate level for you today. If you don’t work on your self-esteem consistently (which is different from working on it constantly) it will seem as if your self-esteem has slipped backwards. The reality your level of self-esteem may not have diminished. Rather, because you have grown and developed it may well be that your self-esteem has not maintained the same level of growth and development. So, by comparison with where you are now it may be that your self esteem is underdeveloped.
The bottom line is you may well have periods of relative calm followed by periods of challenge. That is quite natural. The periods of calm allow you to enjoy the efforts you have made to achieve an appropriate level of self-esteem. The challenging times provide opportunities to work on your self-esteem, to ensure it is up to an appropriate level.
There may be times when you are not willing to take notice of what you see , or to act on what you know. There may be times when you have opportunities to raise your level of awareness, and instead you let the opportunity pass you by, There may be times when you have the chance to deal with your feelings and instead you push them down or push them aside. (If you are in the habit of doing that, no doubt you have had those times when they sneak up from behind, at the most unexpected moments and smack you across the head) There may be times when you need to walk away from something, and instead you stay and try to tough it out. There may be times when you need to stand up for what you really believe, and instead you meekly allow others to trample all over your beliefs. In short, there will be times when you are sorely tempted not to live your life to the level of self-esteem you know to be appropriate. And your level of self-esteem will diminish.
Although one little decision or one out–of-character act might not seem of any real significance in the overall scheme of things, they gather together to form a picture of how you see yourself, how you relate to yourself and how well you cope with whatever it is that life brings your way.
You see, self-esteem is not a static thing. Your level of self-esteem is constantly changing, from day to day, even from hour to hour. But , by working on your self-esteem consistently, you will smooth out the roller coaster ride those up and downs tend to feel like. Maybe you enjoy riding a roller coaster. If so, go to a fair or carnival, pay your money and take the ride. Don’t settle with getting your highs and lows from your sense of well-being. It’s not good, either for you or anyone else.
