I grew up with a woodstove, my Grandparents, both sets had one too. Alot of houses that you buy these days, the older ones have a cold spot because they were built with a wood stove, then it was taken away. Ours had one once, the chimney is still there but the front covered up. This is a lovely article: www.homestead.org/Indoors/CookingonaWoodCookStove.htmI don't agree it takes longer to cook on one, because usually you don't let them go out during the day. There is always hot water for cups of tea and coffee. People have been known to sit in front of the open oven door to warm themselves up. It is certainly a possibility for us to help with black outs. Also we do have an old stove in the shed. Possibly a newer one would be better. We have the wood on hand for our heater. It would be lovely to not to rely on electricity for everything. In our old home we had gas for water and for the stove and heater. Anyone cook with one?
