My 7 yr. old grandson Tyler goes to a one room schoolhouse. Since he lives in the tiny town of Fish Camp, just outside the gate to Yosemite.........he attends their little school right in the National Park. It is called the Wawona School and backs up to the forest. It goes from K-6th and he just loves it there. He informed me that he will be a second grader this Friday when school is out for the summer! They are very small and put on their own fund raisers to raise money for all of them to go on great field trips. There are 17 kids in school and one teacher and one aide. She is a fantastic teacher and boy do all those kids learn! I don't know how she does it but, she has it all down to a science and it works! Tyler was in third grade reader before he got half way through the first grade and his handwriting is better than mine! I wasn't taught cursive till much later in school. Guess they thought we wern't smart enough to learn that young. Boy, were they wrong!

That is interesting Phyll. I didn't realize that there was any one rooms left. I would love to visit it. My husband went to a one room schoolhouse and was taught by his cousin. They are now in the process of restoring his old school house. It is awesome.

Good Morning Carolyn, Yes,there are a few but, the one my grandson Tyler is in is more modern but, still just one classroom. There is an old original white clapboard sided school house not far from me. It is called the Gertrude School.......named for the first teacher. It is now being used as an art center and I went there a couple of weeks ago with my friend to take a water color painting class. It is really neat. Lots of windows on each side but, no air conditioning and it was pretty warm that day. As I stood at one of the windows and looked out on the empty fields all covered in purple Lupine flowers.................well, I could only imagine children playing out there in the sunshine. It felt like walking into the past. On the street behind me which is called School Road..........all three of our schools are on it..................there is a historical park. One of the buildings is the original one room school house that was here in this town. When I moved here 25 years ago it was being used as a library, complete with the pot belly stove! Now, they have moved it to the history center and use it for different meetings and it fits right in with the other old buildings that they have brought to the park. They built a gazebo in the middle and they often use it for weddings. They have other outdoor functions there too and they are fun, like Hobo Night.............you bring your own plate and cup! I never went to a one room school house but, have always had a big attraction to them and that is why Frank is going to build me a small one in our backyard, hopefully this fall! I have everything waiting to put inside of it too. Frank did go to a one room school house when he was little. It was over in the Napa mountains which is closer to the coast and the main region for the grape/wine industry of California. Remember the school on Little House On The Praire? I loved those shows.........well, that is going to be my school.........with a flag pole and all. Ok.............talk to ya later.

What an interesting post Phyll. You must take pictures when Frank gets your little schoolhouse finished. What all do you have gathered for it? If you lived closer I would donate my little student desk and my big oak teacher desk and chair to you. Can't wait to see it. What will you use it for?

Well, I planned to use it to work with my two little grandsons in. They are 5 and 7 yrs. old. Now, however they are planning to sell their home when they finish remodeling it and move to the east coast most likely so my son can go to school back there somewhere. Now, I'm not sure about the "what" part but, I do have about 7 little desks with ink wells and am looking for a teachers desk. I have the old flag and pole, the little pot belly stove, an old pull down map for the wall, a desk top world globe and the bell for the tower and rope to pull it. I have lots of old interior wood to use for the inside from an old house Frank tore down last summer and lots of very old windows and doors to pick from. I just need the teachers desk and a big old black slate blackboard. The name will be Plum Creek School .........from the real life story of Laura Ingals Wilder. I know there is a paint that is supposed to make a blackboard surface but, if at all possible, I want the real thing. There is a place I found in Ohio that still makes them but it won't be cheap so am hoping to find one somewhere out here. I saw an article in a magazine one day of a lady back east whose husband built her a good sized school in her back yard and it was just so cute and authentic looking. mine wouldn't be as big as hers. I suppose I could change it into a guest room but.........we'll have to see. Yes, by all means I'll take pictures of it and post them when he gets it done. And............thank you for the offer but, unfortunately you are just a tad too far away!
