This book, by Virginia Andrews, was written in 1979. It's the story of a seemingly perfect family, whose life takes a terrible turn after the accidental death of their father.
The title refers to the children, who were left to live hidden in an attic for many years. It's not until later in the book that we discover that their loving mother is not what she seems.
I believe the book is based on a true story. In a way I'm glad there's a sequel because I'd like to see the kids get their revenge, or at least achieve some sort of justice for the neglect and abuse they suffered at the hands of the mother and grandmother.
It's a confronting book, and some of it is more than unpleasant, however it is a well-written tale of survival, both of the children and the mother.
