Who has a stockpile?

I was reading on another board how a lot of ladies are stockpiling for the winter, especially the people that live in snow country.

I generally do a bit of stockpiling, but I think this year I'm going to do more. I don't care for driving in the snow at all and with gas prices jumping by leaps and bounds I am making sure I get plenty of everything I can that can be stored.

I don't have a lot of freezer space right now, but that can be remedied. I think it just needs a good sorting and neating up to make room for some frozen things.

I also read on another board that Save-A-Lot has canned veggies on sale for 19¢ per can, that is even cheaper than Aldi's regular 33¢ per can. I have only been there once as I forget about it all the time. It is tucked away behind a couple of other stores. So I am going to check them out today and see what they have. Then on to Aldi's for my baking products and some dairy items and last on to Price Chopper for a couple of loss leaders.

With Jack gone all the time this summer, I haven't really grocery shopped in a long time! I really have to start stocking up.

Hey is $1.98 a dozen for sweet corn a good price? If it is, I'm getting it at the grocery store instead of driving way out of my way to go to a good farmer's stand. I think even if it is more expensive at the store, it will end up cheaper than the gas it will take to go to the farmer's stand.

Oh and is $7.99 for a 200 oz. Era laundry detergent a good price? I haven't had to purchase it in so long, I don't know a good/bad price when I see it. But I will need some very soon.

Dee, that is a good price for corn, I have been paying 3.75 at the farm and it hasn't been that good...I don't know about the Era, I buy Extra in the big thingy at Walmart....I am still using the stockpile I have, so I really have been just buying things that I have to...
We have gotten into the eating out rut again, and I am so mad at myself for it...Got to get back to cooking!!!!

We have had the chance to apy .99 for a dozen corns here a few times, but I think 1.99 is a good proce Dee.

I'm also thinking of stockpiling for the winter. You bet with gaz prices we are not going to drive around as much!

I have ordered some corn for next week. I will have it with zucchini and green beans (string beans?) with salmon patties.

morning all. dee,that's a pretty good price for corn. you can buy lots and it freezes well. i make my own laundry detergent so don't follow the prices any more. i live in snow country so i can and freeze starting now. makes things easier when bad weather hits. also lots of canned goods.

I stockpile somewhat but certainly don't have anything like a lot of people do. I try to keep a full pantry and freezer, and keep at least a couple months supply of things like tp, shampoo, soap, detergents, cat food, batteries, etc. Since I've been doing some canning this summer I'll have even more stuff stored away. I just feel more secure and like I am taking care of my family if I have enough supplies to see us through emergency situations. And I also stock up on stuff if it's on a great sale or I have super coupons. I think stockpiling also is kind of a hobby and maybe with some almost like an addiction, lol. I know I really have to watch myself to keep from going overboard. I bought a bunch of canned stuff on sale a while back and dh said I could open my own grocery store, lol, made me wonder if I did go a little bit overboard but it was all stuff that we eat and the price was good.

People are selling corn for $3 a dozen around here. I have no clue why it's so high. I mean this is Iowa! We had a bunch given to us. I'm thinking it's cheaper to buy the cans, my knuckles will remain intact that way too. (I always include little chunks of MEat when I can corn) We just wrap the ears, husk and all in cheap foil and freeze.

I've got 1/2 a hog in the freezer and am trying to figure out where to store 1/2 a beef. I've got probably 3 months of veggies canned, not counting a years supply of frozen corn on the cob. I think I have a couple dozen boxes of pasta. I keep about 6 months of personal hygine stuff on hand and donate the rest. I have around 30-3# bags of cat food which last about 3 or 4 days each. I think we could eat quite well for 3 months and get by for another 2 only buying milk and cheese along with fresh fruits and veggies. I have 14 loaves of bread in the freezer.

It can't be normal.

We don't go through canned corn as much as we used to. In the past I think I used it for rice salad with celery and ham.

I find I don't use alot of personal hygeine stuff. We get one shampoo and a box of about 6 soaps every two weeks for 7 people, the odd toothpaste. We use laundry soap if we run out of soap. You can also use that soap for shampoo too, I think my Mum used it when she was little.

Mum always had a freezer large enough for beef. I did get pretty full. Do you eat much potato? Australian usually live on potatoes more than the other vegies they have with them.

I buy 28 loaves of bread each fortnight. They are all frozen. We also try to buy two weeks of milk, we buy the UHT, we think we need it because we have milk on our breakfast and in our tea.

I have never been able to get a good stockpile going. I just don't have the extra money. I am going to make a more concentrated effort though. I do buy multiple items of things at the store, sometimes. I bought 10 boxes of Ziti when it went on sale for 4/$1, but we didn't have any on hand at the time, and it was gone in no time.
