I've mentioned my fondness for murder mysteries before. The old-fashioned sort particularly appeal to me; I think it's the banter that I enjoy.
This weekend, after reading the dreadfully poignant Household Guide to Dying by Debra Adelaide, I escaped with a quick, fun, almost trashy read.
It was by accident that I stumbled upon Robert B. Parker a while back. He has written many novels but one series, the Spenser novels, really appeal to me, and dd and eldest ds enjoy them too.
Spenser is a smart-mouthed ex-cop private detective who has a strong sense of justice. The other regulars are his girlfriend the psychiatrist and his friend the big, smooth but tough Hawk.
Ok, they're not going to expand my mind, or be spiritually uplifting, but gosh they're good fun. I think they take the place of tv for me.
Does anyone else read stuff they "shouldn't"? My very devout mil, now passed, used to love romance novels.

Yes, some romance novels are dressed up as inspirational these days, but still maybe are in the shouldn't category. That is my vague memory of a thought I had awhile back. Though I am learning a little bit of American history and things like that.
