I have a tin trunk or chest? I have had it about 18 years. Boy, is it hard work when you open it up, it has insecticide in it. Usually I do it in summer and open the window. It wouldn't have been Australian made it was cheap. Maybe I should get rid of it?

BR, if it is an old old trunk, I wouldn't get rid of it. Why does it have insecticide in it..Do you store that in there???
I love old trunks. Let me go take a picture of one I have and you can see what I did with the lid and inside which I redid because it was damaged.

Here is the outside of the chest. It is very old, was a steamer trunk used for people to travel by ship to America. It was in pretty bad shape...dh worked on it. redid the tinwork, and redid the wood. It had some sort of burlap like material over the tin but it was rotted so we removed it. the only part missing was the hasp in front which you can see is new and brass, even in the old antique hardware books the hasps were all brass, I am sure the original was not brass but since that is all we could locate we put that on it. The only other thing we haven't replaced was the rotted leather handles on the sides. It still has the original try in it but we had to redo the inside as it was musty and in bad shape. I used victorian wall paper and embellished it with tassel, cording and ribbon.

Thanks for posting pics cara.
The paper in my trunk I think was put in the trunk originally with something to stop moths in the paper. It has an awful smell, like insecticide or repellant I perhaps should have called it. I bought it new about 18 years ago.
There is a lovely story I think in Laura Ingalls Wilder's book Little Town On The Prairie where Mary goes to college and they told how they packed the truck and roped it shut etc. I love it.
