is a whole lot neater when the house is tidy.
Who here has a tidy family? Mine were better when they were younger, but these days clothes are shed onto the floor to be picked up "later" , books are spread everywhere. It doesn't matter how organized their rooms are, if there's a horizontal surface, it will gather "stuff"!

The last two times we moved the whole house, I loved having horizontal surfaces. I notice that dh has a thing for horizontal surfaces. So they don't stay empty for long. Any space is to be filled, although I shouldn't say that.
One child puts their bag in the walkway, actually probably two do that. I am still thinking about caras idea of putting up a cedar peg thing because the things will stay on there if they get put there.
At preschool today I felt a little better, some kids spill so much food on the floor.
I have one child who flings clothes, it is very hard.

Violet I understand what you mean. I don't have children at home any longer but I found that when they were young we had clean up time right before bed. They had to find all their items and return them to their rightful place. Then after they went to bed, I would do a quick run thru the house pick up. I didn't like arising in the a.m. and having to see clutter.
BR. the peg idea would work great for coat, hats, scarves, purses, backpacks and if you have it hung right by the door they probably would grow accustomed to hanging them up instead of tossing on the floor or counter top.
Good luck ladies

My family is not tidy at all.... I wash so many towels, we joke about whether we are the cleanest family in town or the dirtiest. Funny how they have such an aversion to water when little....then when they become teeenagers they live in the shower. Everything is dumped on the floor by them...doesn't matter what it is...bookbags, clothes (dirty or clean)......I guess that means they love horizontal surfaces too, namely the floor. It drives me nuts, as I am constantly telling them to pick things up. I find the older they get, the worse they get. I finally just about have to blow a gasket to get them to listen. That's about the only thing that will work...although I have suspended all privileges in the past including phone chatting, video games and tv. Having said all that, I haven't painted a very nice pic of my crew, have I? They are very nice....just not tidy.

Love everyone's stories! A dear, tidy, clean, friend told me that she found mouldy plates and cups in her son's room the one time she was game enough to clean it!
My dd's most disgusting act was to leave a half sandwich in her open lunch box, in her open school bag, on the floor, for a whole week of the school holildays - unfortunately the dog found it and ate it before I noticed. Ick. (dog was fine)
