Into the Wild (1996) by Jon Krakauer came out as a free audio book for those on the Borders email list. I've never listened to an audio book, via ipod, before, so decided to take up their offer. First of all, the author writes for Outside magazine in the States. He is a very observant character, and other articles of his that I've read have been insightful in his distinctive way. The story was interesting, and not the kind of thing I'd have read otherwise. I've posted the link before, but here it is again: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Into_the_WildNow, the audiobook experience. I love reading, and it took me a chapter before I stopped feeling as though I needed to look at a page, or turn back to check something. The rhythm of the fellow reading the book was easy to follow, and there was something nice about being able to hear a story while going about one's chores. I'm not sure that I concentrated as well because of the fact that I could do other things while listening. Also, when interrupted, it's harder to go back and find one's place. It was an interesting experiment. I may try other audiobooks, but don't think that I would ever choose being read to over reading to myself. However, audiobooks would be marvellous for anyone with poor eyesight.
