Picked this book up from the library recently; it appears to be popular as it's been on order for a while. It is a deceptively easy read, despite the harrowing subject matter, and I got through it quickly. As was the case with another book I'd read by this author, there is no heavy-handed moral to the story, rather she paints the picture of what exists in that moment. The story centers around the period of time the narrator has a friend of hers come to stay. The visitor, a close friend, planned to visit for three weeks while having treatment for her terminal cancer. There is a better review on this blog (I have not looked at the rest of the blog): larvatusprodeo.net/2008/04/06/helen-garners-the-spare-room/
