3/23/06
It is cold here, and I am glad I didn't give in to my wants and plant when the weather was in the 70's last week! We have had freeze warnings the past 2 nights, so anything I would have planted would have been gone.
My Hyacinths are almost done, but the ones in the island bed in the front yard give me great joy everytime I come and go. The daffs are done, but the tulips are starting to bloom. If I can keep the girls from picking them as they grow we might have a nice show.
The Easter magnolia in the back yard is blooming. I am going to get John to borrow our friends tiller soon and get the veggie garden turned over. I need to fertilize, and also get some fertilizer for my acid plants - my hydrangeas and peonies. I also need to put a lattice board on the side of the chimney for my Queen Elizabeth climbing rose. My Mom has a regular QE in her front yard that has been there since I was little.
The girls want to plant, so I am pondering where to make little beds for them. DH wants to plants cedars along the back of our lot to block the house from view from the common area.
Lots to do......

Definitely fix the girls a little spot of their own Cheryl. It will be great for them to see their own things growing. Great journal as well.

I found the envelopes I sent away with free seeds in them! There are veggie seeds, but also flower seeds. I think I will let the girls use these. It is supposed to rain today, but I think it is going to be near 70 tomorrow. So, I will start working outside and let the girls play. I need to sweep our front steps - we always come and go through the garage and I am a bit embarrassed about the amount of leaves that have blown up there!
I need to pull some weeds around the mailbox so my morning glory can come out! And I need to check on the peonies to see if they are coming back up. I think the biggest thing I need to do is just walk around the yard and plan!

Today it has been near 70, so I took the girls outside to play. I got the front walk swept and some weeds pulled around my mailbox. I also hoed a bit in the veggie garden so there won't be so many when we till.
Two little boys from across the street came over and all were running around my house. Before I know it my gazing ball is broken. They said it blew over, but I don't think so. Can't afford to get a new one, but I really want a blue one and a new stand. Dream a little dream.

I am sorry you have kids like that in your street. We had a front yard with no fence in a court last time. Before we moved in they had the topiary branches broken off and a few other things. They always seemed to be at our place for awhile.

Still haven't gotten my veggie garden tilled. I am hoping to get it done this weekend or we will be getting our first tomatoes in September! The azaleas and blooming and so are the tulips and phlox.
The rhododendrons shouldn't be too far behind. I noticed the first little pink flower on the flowers around the mailbox (can't remember what they are called). Thankfully they bloomed before DH weed wacked them down like he did last year!
Then there is the petunia that wouldn't die. It struggled through the winter (although it was really mild) and it is full of pink blooms already! Tough girl!
Our yard definately looks it's best in the spring.

I love phlox, it smells so nice. I hope a nice lady offers one for sale up the street, so I can buy one. What colour is yours Cheryl?

Mine are shades of pink and purple. My tulips are pink and red and the azaleas are bright pink. The rhododendrons are lavendar. All the pink looks pretty with the blue house with white trim.

Well, my Rhododendrons are blooming and the front of the house looks lovely. I still haven't gotten my veggie garden tilled or planted.
Amanda planted a little sunflower seed in a cup during story time at the library and it has sprouted. We are going to find a place for her to plant it outside where she can see it. Probably by the shepherd's hook that holds the hummingbird feeders. The cannas are planted there and we can see it from the dining room window.

More stuff from me. Here are some pics of the front. One Rhododendron looks pitiful because we had to have the windows resealed and they chopped it to pieces. Here is the petunia that wouldn't die. It looks sad because the hyacinth stems are dying back and alas we lost another shingle which I need to pick up. And my little bits of whimsy - my flamingoes And my frog. I taught 2 year old choir at church last year and we learned a froggie song. One of the moms got me this for a year end gift.

I love your flowers and things Cheryl.
What a shame someone cut your rhodo. We had alot of them at our rental property in 2003. They had a hard life but in the spring they were just gorgeous, the conditions were nice for them there so they carried on regardless. I didn't have any in our hometown, they grew OK for some people but you had to try so hard. When I was little we lived in the mountains like here and they were lovely. So I must try again. The azaleas we put in love it and grow like mushrooms, despite the odd breakage in the backyard, they just grow so fast.
The other rhodo you have is the perfect colour for the house.
I like to let my bulbs die back naturally too.
My daughter planted her own sunflower too and it is still doing OK despite the lateness in the season. I hope Amanda loves her sunflower.
I found some phlox in a catalogue the other day, wrong season now though, hopefully I will remember when the catalogue comes again.

I still don't have my veggie garden in. I am not sure I am going to get to it this year. I did look out and see that my Hydrangea is getting ready to bloom! yay! I guess the coffee ground helped. Maybe my Peonies will bloom next year.
I still have some seeds to let the girls plant and Amanda has a sunflower seed that has sprouted.
Well, off to mow the grass for DH!

No veggie garden this year. Just didn't have the energy, time or money to do it. Oh well, maybe a year a rest for the plot is good anyway.
I must admit that I didn't do much anything in the yard this year. I didn't plant on the pots on my deck or on my porch. I didn't do anymore work on my little sitting spot. Maybe next year for this as well.
I do know that this year I have to dig up the cannas in the winter! They have spread so much they are taking over the path from the deck to the backyard. They really don't need to be dug out here, since it doesn't get so cold.
DH took all the shrubs out in front of the house, except for the azaleas and rhododendrons. He and Amanda picked out flowers for the now bare areas and he is planting today. I really, really want a gazing ball for that spot....

My Mum had cannas along a fence, we don't dig them up either. They are pretty aren't they? The modern ones are nice with the pink. Have fun with the planting.
