Hm, the characters in this book are thoroughly feral. I've only read a chapter, and think I'll just skim through to see if anything actually happened about the incident described in the title.
The main character hosted a barbecue at his house. One of the young kids was behaving like a right brat, screaming, kicking, breaking things. The home owner lost his temper and smacked the kid - actually he slapped the child's face. He certainly should not have slapped the child, although a smack on the backside would not have been out of order; the parents are quite useless.
The parents have launched an assault charge against the fellow who slapped the child.
The book is well-written, but he wastes far too much time disclosing information that would improve the book if it was left out.
My recommendation, no matter what you hear about this book, is not to bother. It's like a scummy soap opera. Ick.
