barbaraehrenreich.com/nickelanddimed.htmBy Barbara Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed is her story of trying to live on the minimum wage in the USA. She set herself the challenge of being able to find a job and accommodation in a new area, and then save enough money to be able to pay rent the following month, while still paying bills and managing to eat. It wasn't do-able, and she writes with compassion about those who are forced to live impossible lives because of their low-wage jobs. One of her jobs was as a cleaner and much of what she said rang so true to me. I cleaned and ironed at various times over the years, so that there was money to spend on clothes, home repairs and the like. It's hard work, and very much underappreciated. I used to have to bite my tongue a lot. I do recommend this book, which is an easy read, to anyone with an interest in the inequities in our society.
