Okay...I used to hear all the time that one way to get to know someone was to have a look at their bookshelves.
*I* prefer to have a look 'round their computer, which is where a lot of us spend a lot of time.
So...fire up the fingertips, have a look around, and confess. Photos are even better. No one is excused from this assignment!
Man, mine's gonna be a novel.[/tt]

Whoa! Sorry about the teensy tiny text on that original post. Okay... Staring AT my computer, I can see 'round the edges... An empty jar that once held cashews or almonds or some kinda nut - yeah, um, it's been there a few days. Must move it before it becomes a permanent fixture. A few rocks from various 'stops along the way' - I tend to pick up rocks that catch my eye. <loves rocks> - My hubby's business cards for his website
some assorted pens and office equipment (stapler, hole punch, etc.) a bookmark for my niece (need to send it!) that has her beloved "funny cars" on it (Volkswagon bugs) a box of Smints (like TicTacs, but sugar-free) assorted letters and bills in a stack photos in a stack blank CDs for copying music a bowl of rocks (told you, I like rocks) books from university a stack of papers from assignments last semester a stack of cookbooks
To my left is a tall window, and if I look away from this monitor I can often see birds in the flax bush when it's in bloom. I used to see them in the prunus tree before hubby went a-gardening - with a chainsaw. :-( On the window ledge are: - a Florida State University license plate
3 turtles of various sizes and styles 2 miniature flower pots 2 miniature birdhouses and a garden "stone" saying "inspiration"
On the wall in front of me: five shelves. My stuff is on the lower one: - More stacks of photos
a wall plaque I bought as a 20-something - a bear fishing in a river a stuffed toy penguin my nephew gave me a beanie baby kiwi that a friend gave me a wall plaque - eagle and flag on wood - that my nephew and niece gave me framed photos of family - mostly the kids photos of me and my sisters as kids computer speakers 2 more miniature birdhouses a deck of 'healing cards' a lamp a needlepoint? wall hanging from a friend
So that's my environment!

I have a toy kiwi with a broken leg! Not near the computer though, so it doesn't count. Your beanie sounds very desirable.
Software, bills, cookbooks, map of the US, family tree stuff, garden catalogue.
A door leading to the laundry and a door outside, no view.

You do NOT, I repeat, you do not want to see around my puter right now. LOL. Ok, I will take a picture later, but for now let me describe it. Bear in mind that we are in the process of remodeling this room..LOL. Oh boy.
On the desk is the keyboard, monitor, speakers, printer, the DSL box, a file box that is opened with files spilling out of it...my mouse, mouse pad and the equipment for the wireless mouse.
Also on top is my grandsons, new cd player, the box and case that his new computer game came in..the registration card for that game...my digital camera, a stack of papers and.....a can of Scrubbing Bubbles toilet bowl cleaner with a rag on top of it..*Don't ask* LOL
to my left, is a step stool, with a box to mail on it. The paper shredder, a gallon of paint, a bag of papers from my boss, (work) a wicker basket with things in it to take to dd, a wicker can with stuff I want to sell, and a large stack of wainscoting, waiting to be put up..The rest of the room is empty...as we are working ...On the wall to my left is a quilt, and the back wall has a window with a shade, valance, light in the sill and a couple things on the walls. I will post pics later.
Oh yea and a door leading to the hall way, which I don't use often enough to get out of this computer room.
Ok, now that you know how messy I am , how messy are U. Come on gals.
Good thread Beth..
**modified to add, that now I have grandson's shirt on top of the printer..LOL. He just came in and ask that I iron it for him so he will look nice for his pics, I am taking him to be photographed later**

We are spongebob fans here, although I don't watch it myself, could be a bit much. The other day my son 14 told us an interesting scientific fact he learn from Spongebob, I had to giggle. Spongebob has a use after all! The writers must know alot of things!

Oh boy..... I'd be too embarassed. Actually, I was going to take before photos for Harmony Haven. If I ever get it cleaned up (put away, I haven't touched this room except to pile more stuff since we moved in) you all can help me figure out how to decorate it.

Braided - a Kiwi with a broken leg?! You ARE an Aussie! ;-) You like cookbooks, too? Are you an adventurous cook? Are you ordering anything from the garden catalogue?
Teddy - I just visited the Mary Englebreit page, as I'd never heard of her before. Neat. Hot Pockets - another thing we don't have here; I didn't really eat them very often when I was in the US, but when they (or anything else) are NOT available, you have these mad, mad cravings for them. Pimiento Cheese has just about been my downfall on more than one occassion, LOL. Now as for Spongebob...we're sending an investigator out to check for foul play. ;-)
Oh, Carolyn, I may regret this, but I HAVE to ask! Scrubbing Bubbles toilet bowl cleaner?! How or why is that on your computer desk?! Did the monitor get THAT dirty? What kinda sites are you visiting that you have to scrub it with toilet cleaner?! ;-) How old is your grandson? (And yeah, with all the stuff I described, especially all of Alister's papers behind me, this room is more messy than tidy!)

Hmm, well our computer sits in a little nook in the family room so there's no room for anything but the desk. On the desk, apart from computer, printer, etc., is a pack of blank cds, a piece of an eraser, my dd's friend's little usb device, a broken mp3 player, various scribbled notes, dictionary and thesaurus, and a paintbrush. A lot of junk for a small space. Looking to the left and front there's just wall, but to the right is a burgundy drape held open with a burgundy and gold tasselled tie back. Behind that is the window which looks on to a little deck with four chairs and an octagonal wooden table with a pot of last years impatiens on it. Beyond that is the edge of the deck which is surrounded by cream uprights with burgundy rails, then the Japanese maple just coming in to leaf. Beyond that, our small back garden. Actually the view would be nicer if the windows were clean!

Violet - when you wrote "various scribbled notes" I realized that I had forgotten to include one 'important' piece of what is on my desk! It's a large pad of paper - something like 18" x 2' if I was guessing - and on it I make notes - I change it out every few months, when a page is full, simply by ripping it off and starting all over. Doesn't stay clean for long!
As for cleaner windows...we live on a hill, so the front of our house sorta hangs out a bit. When you're on the top deck, you're anywhere from 5' to 20 or 30' off the ground. Well, we had the front of the deck enclosed last year - this is the part of the deck that is highest above ground. There is no way I'm climbing a ladder to clean the large plates of glass, and I don't want to WATCH when Alister does. I'm thinkin' that no matter what a window cleaner charges, it's worth it!
I'm not even GOING there about curtains! LOL Well, the one in here's not so bad - a rusty orange color - but the blind is outdated, and the curtains in the rest of the house are SCREAMING 1970s. Alister's daughter has offered to make some curtains for us so that is definitely something I want to do this year.

Thankfully, my Mum has done the curtain making already, and the stylish previous owner I saw this morning had some nice pink drapes done, but sadly the pink tie has been put in the linen press ie sheet cupboard.
The broken leg on my childhood toy happened when one of my eldest children took it to school, bad mistake lol.
I also was given a tiki when I was a child too, I hope it only brought good luck, not that I know anything about them.
Our living/lounge has a window in the corner with a similar view to Miss Violet, past the pink curtains I mentioned, with a deck, no chairs yet, things that we haven't unpacked are out there. It has metal rails in a dark green. The side fence is beyond it. Next year when our daughter is older we will unlock it and use it to access the carport. Our maple is out the kitchen window at the back, one small one is coming into leaf.
I wanted to order Dropmore catmint it doesn't hang down as much as mine. Also dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff' for the purple leaves, achillea 'summer wine', like a tansy only red. Eupatorium maculatum 'Gateway" because it looks good with gumtrees and rusted tin that the neighbours have, there is none on the Lambley website though. Lilium regale, which is supposed to be the real Christmas lily and a white veronica.
I think it was one dahlia that one nursery said looks good with garden grasses and coreopsis for a prairie look, may not go too well with snakes.
I don't think I will be ordering from it unfortunately but that was my wishlist.
Cooking, we try new things alot, but usually I leave the jalapenos out if I am planning Mexican.
The material for my curtains we already had, as dh worked for a material factory. One roll we bought at a cheaper price, and the other was signed off as it wasn't 100% perfect. It was a huge piece. I think it was a blessing that these materials exactly suited our new/old house.
