Because pools are such an expensive proposition, it's important to give a lot of time to design. You'll only build it once, and therefore your choices of materials and detailing should be high quality and timeless so your pool design won't go out of style in the near future. Beware of fads. Question new materials before you invest. The rigors of weather and chemically treated water may have far reaching consequences for newer materials that have not stood the test of time and use.

You can actually renovate the pool in other structural ways to make it more attractive. How about adding what builders call a Baja sun shelf? This is an enlarged entry step at the shallow end where sunbathers can relax on lounge chairs nearly covered with water.

One of the main advantages of a solar pool cover is that it not only prevents heat from escaping, it also heats the water up. This is because the construction of a solar pool cover traps heat underneath which then heats the water, depending on the amount of sunlight that the pool has had.
