We have a modern wood heater in the lounge set in an oldfashioned chimney. My husband thought the chimney space at the top the way they set it up was a bit narrow, and that it was getting blocked.
Yesterday the fire, even when turned up was working very well, like it was shut down. He decided to come home early straight after work to fix it at least until the weekend. I was cold sitting at the computer my hands were cold.
He heard a roaring in the chimney and from experience knew that it was going to catch on fire. He was on the roof so I ran in and turned the heater down.
I was wondering later if we needed a longer garden hose in case of something like that. He said we would use a bag to put it out, like a bag over the top of the chimney.
I am assuming he means an oldfashioned hessian type bag that potatoes used to come in. I will ask him later.
I just bought some bags from a collectables shop not that long ago.
Have you had any experience with chimneys?

A fire blanket is a great thing to have handy, Br. We have one in the kitchen cupboard for easy access. It's made of a special non-burning material and is in a quick-release case.
We haven't had the chimney cleaned for a long while, but had a lovely fellow come around to sweep it. I know that birds do like to nest in them during the warmer months, so both our chimneys have chicken wire nailed to them. It isn't visible from anywhere, and it keeps the worst of the mess out.
