You will need:
Bar of Ivory soap 1 cup of washing soda (Arm and Hammer for example) Water
Directions:
Fill large bucket or container with 3 gallons of hot tap water.
Grate the bar of soap into a saucepan. Add just enough water to cover the soap, and heat, stirring constantly until soap is dissolved.
Add soap/water mixture to the hot water in the bucket. Stir to combine.
Add 1 cup of washing soda and stir (do not mix up these steps).
As this cools, it will turn into a white gelatinous soap. Thickness depends on the size of bucket used.
Use 1 1/2 to 2 cups per load of laundry. You can add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the load as well. Use 1/2 cup vinegar in a downy ball as a softener (the vinegar smell does not stay in your clothes).

Has anyone tried this laundry detergent recipe? I have been thinking about it for a long time...

Luc,
I used it after making an entire batch, then I realized I was allergic to one of the ingredients. But if no one in your family has sensitive skin, I say it would be good. It works great and lasts a long time.

I made this a number of times when the kids were younger. It was fine for delicate stuff, but I found it didn't clean the boys clothes well. Now I've got a front loader, it may be a different story.

Oh that was too bad you were allergic to something....but if you think it can work well...I'll give it a try. Maybe I can still keep on buying Tide if the clothes are too stained...
