We have one and use it occasionally.

I have phases of using non-commercial cleaners, and during one of them I used one of those soap cages and a bar of Velvet or Preservene laundry soap to do the dishes. I found that it required a heap of soap to even begin to remove anything oily, so gave it up and went back to dishwashing detergent.

For a while there I also did the grated soap/washing soda or borax thing and made soap jelly to wash the clothes in, but again, I found the results disappointing.

Soap seems to leave a residue that's difficult to remove too.
