Towels?

I have a couple of questions. First how in the world do you get new towels to be absorbent? Honestly, it seems like they scotchguard the things! I don't use fabric softener on them. Any ideas?
Secondly, I have some towels that smell clean out of the dryer, but once they are used have that yucky smell. (We use towels more than once here). Anything I can add to the wash that might help? We can't have a clothesline per our neighborhood covenants so line drying is out of the question.
I have started drying them on hot, maybe that will help?

Cheryl,
It has been my experience that it takes at least 10 washings to get towels to be absorbent. Don't know what they put on the but it drives me crazy too. I think they us sizing on them.
As to the smell, I have noticed that with my towels sometimes and I think it helps to never toss towels on the floor together and to wash them quickly. Also I noticed the smell was gone if I put a little vinegar in the rinse water when you wash. (even though most washer manufacturers say not to use vinegar.

I was going to say white vinegar in the wash as well. I'm one that believes in white vinegar for everything. LOL

I use ammonia in mine. I live in a hot humid climate and in the summer, well, let's just say the towels can smell pretty gross. They come out smelling fresh, sweet and clean. Not like ammonia at all.

I always add just a drop or two of clorax to the water, fill the tub, and then add the towels. I have an eye dropper that I use for this purpose, and none of my towels have faded or bled.

Mother said to add Salt to the water? has anyone ever heard of this? I thought you added salt to keep the colors from fading.
