www.associatedcontent.com/article/405357/washing_clothes_by_hand.htmlHere is an interesting link to an article on washing clothes by hand! I use to wash our clothes on a washboard after boiling water in a wash pot by our creek. We lived in a travel trailer and didn't have any kids, although I did wash the Oldest DS clothes by hand til he was about two...I really appreciate my washer, but sometimes I think about that...and it did take just about a whole Monday morning to do the laundry!

I used to adore reading a novel by Maria D. Wilkes, I think it was Little House in Brookfield about Laura Ingalls of Little House on the Prairie mother. There is a chapter called Wash Day. It is a lovely book based on some facts. www.harpercollins.com/books/9780061148217/Little_House_in_Brookfield/index.aspxHow wonderful to find a formula for this on the net. I do have a washboard, not sure where we got it, it is an old one. There was/is a lovely blog on homesteadblogger that mentions this, I haven't read it for awhile. I think the username was Glenda, but not sure. They have a search maybe washing by hand may come up and others may do it too. It is nice to put your hands in the Aussie wool wash or Softly and warm water, but I find I don't wash woollens anymore to speak of.

Eeeeyyuukkkkk.... I really, really dislike hand washing. Ever. I love the smell of wool wash, love the smell of eucalyptus oil, love the feel of freshly washed woollens, but do not like hand washing at all. Never have. My complaining could be heard for days when the old washing machine broke down (yet again), leaving me with tons of diapers and clothes to hand wash. Those old washboards look gorgeous, but I hope never to have to use one for the purpose for which they were intended!!

Wow, when I did do it I enjoyed it. I think that is why I am hanging on to my twin sink. Though I can't see myself doing it straight away. I suppose it started with the twin tub washing machine, where you had to swish the clothes in the rinse water.

I really did like washing on the washboard But, I too, have cried LOUDLY when the washer would break! It made me take a slower pace in life. One had to plan the day doing one task at a time, or maybe two if one of them didn't require a "hands-on" approach. I am not always so sure that the ability to "multi-task" is such a good thing....seems a bit stressful at times Oops...best I not get started on that soapbox !

I agree; I've never liked that "over-scheduled" thing that lots of people seem to do. You know, if there's a spare minute then it should be spent in a class or putting together the best floral display or most elaborate cake.
No, I just plain old hate hand washing! ;D
