Okay everyone, I propose a challenge to you all. During the summer let's all get outside with our kids and PLAY at least twice a week! I remember being a kid and we loved having the adults play with us.
Not only will this be good exercise for everyone, but can be a great time to really get to know your children. Just observe and learn, kids are really just little people. Give them the same courtesy you would an adult. You will be surprised what you can learn.
Of course remember that sunscreen for everyone, wear a hat, take lots of breaks, drink plenty of water and if playing outside at night, don't forget the bug repellent! If you live in the city and have air quality warnings be careful to not stay out too long or play after it cools down in the evening. [/color]
Here are some ideas for you:
Ride bikes
Frisbee
Nature walks (and discuss what you find, good learning experience)
Jump Rope
Baseball or Softball
T-Ball
Volley Ball
Badminton
Football
Jax
Pick up Stix
Chinese Jump Rope
Hop Scotch
Draw on the sidewalk with chalk
Basketball
Swimming
Hide and Go Seek (best played at night )
Don't forget to have lunch outside at a table or on a blanket. They can color outside or use those paints you don't like in the house. Do crafts especially messy ones outside.
And remember, it doesn't always have to be playing, you could be working outside and recruit the children to "help".
Sweeping the sidewalk? Let them use their little broom to help.
Working in the garden? They can help dig, if they don't have a small trowel give them an old spoon! They can also use their sand bucket to pick up your weed piles.
Children like to be with adults and do "grown up" things. Let them help you.
Okay, so who is up for the challenge?
Whenever I see my niece and nephew this summer, I'll be outside with them playing! ;D
