The girls and I rented the movie Dreamer this week. It is the one with Kurt Russell and Kris Kristofferson. It was filmed in Lexington, KY and Versailles. I loved, loved, loved this movie. What a great family film. Of course it helps to see Kentucky...I miss my Old KY Home!

I been to Lex and Versailles and I will have to watch it and see if I recognize anything. Did you? Aww Cheryl, come on down. I am only 2 hours from Lex, 2 from Louisville, and 2 from Nashville. I would love to have ya.

Thanks Carolyn! LOL! We were in KY in June fo a week. But, just seeing all the pretty horse farms, and rolling hills made me homesick!
I recognized Keeneland immediately, and the stone walls on the farms on the north side of Lexington. I kept trying to place the other racetracks, but some of it was filmed in LA, so I think one of those was there.

Speaking of Lexington, yesterday I learnt there was a Shaker village there. I loved Kurt Russell when I was young.

Speaking of Lexington, yesterday I learnt there was a Shaker village there. I loved Kurt Russell when I was young. braided-rug, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but.....my wife and I are big-time into authenticity and history, and Shaker Village managed to not come close to satisfying either of those tastes. Just last summer were at Shaker Village (the last time we will go there). There just isn't much to see there. I realize that the Shakers were pretty plain people, but you'd think that in this many years tourists would get to see a bit more for their hard-earned bucks. I guess that's what happens when state government and local history mix together.

In the novel Shaker Run they had a village. The story was about opening it up for tourists. What I remember is the herb gardens, a certain type of antique rose, great meals, the cemetary, the furniture. I wonder if the Lexington one has a website?

The Shaker Village is called Pleasant Hill. Every kid in KY had to go there on a field trip in Elementary school. They were very plain people, but the history was fascinating to me. We saw a lot of demonstrations of period chores etc. It is actually closer to Harrodsburg I think. www.shakervillageky.org/

Yeap, they sure do: www.shakervillageky.org/They're all about the greenbacks, unfortunately. I'm from Kentucky, and as much as I love my homestate, I can't recommend Shaker Village (in Harrodsburg, Kentucky) to anyone. Now, if you want to see a REAL, authentic, everything-where-it-was kind of historical museum, visit Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. Their website is here www.sturbridge.com/. My wife is from Massachusetts, that's how I got to see the place. As much as I don't like the people in Massachusetts (they're very different from Kentuckians, IMO), I'd go back to Sturbridge in a heartbeat. The two are just vastly different, and I don't know if the difference is that the Shakers no longer exist and thus it's difficult to find any information on them (or that their communities were so small), or that Massachusetts just knew what the heck they were doing when they went about bringing Sturbridge back to life.

Haven't been to Shaker Village, but it is one place I have on my list. Sounds like I should cross it off eh? Where in KY do you live gardentalk? I live in Columbia, used to live in Pikeville.
