Ladies:
What are you doing to encourage summer reading? I have one who loves to read and one who only reads when he HAS to:) We read together- they still like me to read to them even tho' they are nine. My anti-reader likes to listen to books on tape, so we've done some of that.

Tam, maybe you could do a "rewards" type thing to encourage his reading? Like if he reads x amount of books he gets a pizza. or goes to see a movie. etc... With Daniel we did these thing and it helped until he was 12 now he gets $1.00 for everybook he reads, but he has to do a report for us to prove he read it

Tami,
I think Ellise has a good idea there. I know here at our Pizza Huts, they have a similar program. Read x amount of books and they get a coupon for a free personal pizza.
What is he interested in? Cars, aircraft, skateboards, favorite ball player, chemistry.....? Find out what interests him most and have him look up books that pertain to the subject in the library.
While we all hope children will become well rounded in their reading habits, it has to start with something they like. I bet if he could read about something he loves, you will have a hard time getting him to put the book down to eat dinner. Just my opinion here.

Thanks ladies-great ideas. I did already offer the $1 per chapter book read and he read one and then moved to easier ones at 25 cents a piece. That held his interest for a little while. I may just need to remind him about the $. he likes having it- can't spend it fast enough!

Tam, what about a Favorite something? Meal, movie, toy, outing, video game (would need to read lots to merit one of these), Does he enjoy cooking? if so then if he reads say 3 chapter books then he can help cook his favorite meal, or gets to choose and help plan the weeks menu? Just trying to remember what I did with Daniel. HTH

We did the cooking thing with Daniel and he has turned out to be a really good cook!. Infact he cooks 1 meal a week for us, and it is usually something really fancy and very delish!
Hope this will help get you gang in gear.
