Do you utilize your public library, or do you prefer to get something off the shelf in your home? Over the years I have spent way too much $$$ on books for my home library. While I enjoy having them at my disposal, I wish I had used my local library more?
What do you do, check out more from the library or do you like to buy books.?

We don't have a library in our town. Nearest one is over 20 miles away, and would cost me $100/year for a card.
I haunt the garage sales, thrift stores, freecycle for books, and watch the paper for the neighboring town's library sales. Then I buy books for pennies each, read them and resell them at MY yard sale - generally making a profit in the process.

I go to my bookcase too. I have a library card, which is good for the surrounding 4 counties, but our local library has some of the strangest hours I've ever seen!
So like you Car, I have spent a mint over the years on books and book clubs and just tend to re-read what I have in my bookcases.

Public library. I read lots and there is no way I could afford all those books. Some weeks I may read 2 books, just depends on my free time and my mood. If the book is really good, I've been known to finish it in 2 days.

I have always LOVED the public library. I have a very small home library so I go to the public one once a week. I also share books with friends, we all have our favorite christian authors so if one of us gets a new one, we pass it around when it is finished. I also don't mind rereading the ones I've already got. In fact I've got a couple I reread evrey year or so!

I check out tons of books at the local library, but if I really like a series or author I will sometimes buy those books to have at home. Lately it seems I've only been buying gluten-free cookbooks; wonder how many I'll buy before I feel like I have enough, lol.

I have a suggestion, if anyone is interested. I love buying books, because it takes me such a varying amount of time to read them (sometimes a day, sometimes 3 months), so the library can be frustrating. I am a member of a website called thebookcart.com, which helps you trade paperbacks with people. You basically just pay the postage. It's an amazing website--so much there, all for under $3! (shipping is like $2.25 or something like that). Don't know if this is okay to post, but thought you readers may be interested!

seuss34. My Mother and I do this! What a great way to get to read many different books, ones that you might not have chosen for yourself!
I'd say I use all the above when it comes to books. Library, goodwill, dollar Tree, thrift stores, Mother, but them myself.

I love the library but they don't have alot of variety for english books. So I usually buy the books that I am really interested in, when I can't borrow them at the library.

There is another site called paperbackswap.com that is similiar to the one you mentioned Seuss. I joined it a few weeks ago and love it.
I used to buy books alot.. but dh put a stop to it, and now I use the library and the online swap sites.

It's so funny that you were "forced" to stop buying books--that's actually how I came to find thebookcart.com! I realized when we moved that I had WAY WAY WAY too many books that didn't have a home and weren't about to, but I couldn't force myself to throw any away. So I looked for that kind of thing. I hadn't heard of paperbackswap.com, but I'll check it out, too! Thanks!

You know I'm loving this thread since I am my small town's librarian! LOL! I do both...I have an extensive home library (we homeschool so it's an "occupational hazard" ) and we also use the library and it's online resources quite a bit.
