My neighbour owns a book store, so a few years ago she decided to start a book group. There were a lot of women from the street, and a few friends too. A few dropped out last year/early this year, including me, but there's still a good turn up each month.
Most of the other women are teachers and have very well considered opinions on each book. Many of the books that have been chosen over the years are newer, Booker Prize winning books - very well-written modern literature.
I may go back to it later in the year, but for now am content to spend my evenings at home.
Does anyone else belong to a book group, and do you find it detracts from your enjoyment of reading?

Nope no book clubs for me. I use to read all the time, but..my problem is I start a book and don't know when to put it down. I have to limit my reading time...My family likes something called dinner..LOL

I call cooking while reading multi-tasking lol! I think we share a similar problem, Cara!

Our Pastor's wife has a book club at our church...I haven't joined in yet because the selections have not been very interesting to me...It sounds like they have fun, they meet at Starbuck's once a week ...

I've never joined one, partly because I haven't found one near me, and partly because I don't like to dissect the books I read. It reminds me too much of high school and college where we used to read a book and then talk it to death. I ended up disliking the very books that I started out liking. I hope that made sense!

Reading is my "recreational form of relaxtion." I'm afraid it wouldn't be that at all if I belonged to a club.

It's good to hear I'm not the only one who doesn't enjoy dissecting what I've read! As mentioned in my initial post, there are a number of teachers in the book group, and I think they dissect what they read out of habit lol, so they don't mind that side of things.
I like the idea of meeting at a Starbuck's once a week, Jayne, whether to discuss the book or just chat!

I get really interested in them every time I read about it in the Family Circle. They have a little book club article that is fiction in itself, I haven't really got a handle on it yet lol. I have been involved in the Mother/Daughter bookclub at www.homesteadblogger.com/beautyandgrace we have the current book. Starbucks sounds alright Jayne. My son met someone for something at Starbucks a couple of months ago. Not sure if that would add up.

I second the idea of Starbucks. I love coffee!
