How could the title NOT have caught my eye? It's by Catherine Goldhammer, and so far, is a lovely read.
It's the story of her life after an amicable divorce from her husband. She has to leave her fabulous house, in a place she calls Hearts-are-Cold, where she "never felt blonde enough or rich enough or well enough dressed".
I suppose I identify with her as we live in a similar-sounding area, where I've always been "different", ie I don't go the hairdresser for a cut and blonde foils every six weeks, nor do I spend my days shopping and playing tennis, or researching Botox and having manicures.
The blurb on the back reads:
"I did not have a year in Provence, or a villa under the Tuscan sun. I did not have a farm in Africa. Instead, my diminished resources dictated a move to a run-down cottage in a honky-tonk town where live bait is sold from vending machines. But, in a town where houses rub elbows, I came to live in a hidden place at the edge of a salt pond, beside a small forest, nine hundred feet from the sea. In a town where everyone knows everything, I came to live in a place no one knows exists."
The chickens in the title refer to the half-dozen chicks she bought her daughter which sort of pulled them through the changes in their lives.
Anyone else read this?

Hmm, I wonder if I should read it too.

Hey, that sounds interesting, and it's set in Massachusetts (the state where I live) too. I'm going to add it to my reading list (I have 2 more books to read--that I already have here at home from the library) eta it looks pretty popular--there are 6 libraries in our consortia that carry it, and it's checked out at all 6 lol

I was wondering where it was set, thanks Michelle. I am considering asking my library to stock it.

I was wondering where it was set, thanks Michelle. I am considering asking my library to stock it. Yeah, I didn't know that until I saw how my library categorized it (I can see their "card catalog" online). Now I'm eager to read it and see how accurate the setting is
