I really enjoyed this, so much so that I read it in a day! It was lucky there wasn't much on that afternoon, so I just hid in a corner..and read!
The story starts with a young Amish girl giving birth in the barn at her home. Next thing it's morning and the baby's vanished - God answering her prayers and making the problem go away, she thought. Well the baby is found dead, wrapped in a bundle of clothing, and so starts the drama.
Charged with murder, the Amish girl, Katie, is saved from remaining in jail until the trial by a distant cousin. Ellie, the cousin, is a sharp city attorney who is becoming disallusioned by her "success" and decides to take time out from her life - and her relationship - by staying with her Aunt and Uncle. They live in the country, near the Amish, and we later find that the Aunt was raised Plain but married a non-Amish person so lives nearby as she can't live with them anymore.
Katie's mother, Sarah, is Ellie's Aunt's sister - and so begins the entwining of their very different lives.
The repercussions of Katie's hidden pregnancy spread far, and although we're given clues the whole way through, it isn't until the end that all the facts finally come to light. The Amish do not lie, but they don't always volunteer information, at least not in this book.
I enjoyed learning a little of the Amish way of life, and the way the author plays with the differences and the similarities between Katie and Ellie.
It was Michelle's description of this book that made me seek it out, and I'm glad I did, so thanks Michelle!
