Big White Lie: Chinese Australians in White Australia by John Fitzgerald (UNSW Press).
Steven Carroll's review in the Age, reads in part that this book "....puts the whole issue in historical perspective, looking at the Chinese presence in Australia from the mid-19th century onwards. This is incisive, clear and accessible academic writing, and makes (among many others) the valid point that what some might call "Australian values" are no more than an idiomatic expression of the universal values of freedom and equality."

Is it about the soujourners Violet? Where I lived as a child, I saw a map once with the names of the people that settled our district. All but one or two on this particular map where Chinese people. Since then some of the farms have never had English etc. names, which I think it interesting. That was just an off-topic comment I suppose.

I think it's on topic, Br, as the Chinese contribution to Australia is underestimated.

I am sure that is an understatement actually. I will be pondering life without the Chinese I knew of.

Lol, given that a great-great-great or so grandfather on my mother's side is apparently Chinese, I wouldn't even be here!!

Yes, sorry Violet. I know two ladies with similar stories and they are both very lovely people. Nice looking too.
