My cucumbers have been a bit of a disappointment this year. They started out fairly good, not great, but kept getting increasingly bitter as we picked them. Size didn't seem to matter and some were so bitter that you'd have to spit them right out. Any ideas as to what caused this and what I might can do differently next year? These were vine cucumbers. I tried to plant bush cucumbers as well but they just refused to live.

Just found out from my Dad about this Pat. Bitter cucumbers are due to too little water, you have to water them regularly for them not to be bitter. You can still save them too by watering. HTH

That's what I found on the internet as well but didn't think it could be true. We've have rain, upon more rain here. Maybe because it was an uneven amount - tons for one week and only a bit for the next. We've had so much rain that nothing has had to be watered in the last 2 months.

Yep Pat, dad said uneven watering can do it too. They need water on a regular basis. Now I know why us kids had to water the garden everyday!

That's probably it then. We were counting on the rain being enough. Looks like next year we will be watering those cukes on a regular basis and not waiting for mother nature to rain on us.
