My daughter was reading through an Australian Better Homes & Garden magazine. It is an older one. I came across some pictures of quilts. One had a hexagonal pattern. I learnt this type of quilting when I was 13 and went to stay with a friend on her parent's farmhouse. I have been wondering how to do it lately, as it is the only quilting I know. The same photo is on this website with instructions. It is also called English patchwork. This girl, now that I think about it, her mother was born in England I think. au.blogs.yahoo.com/better-homes-gardens/847/grandmothers-garden-quilt/

It is interesting that our bathroom tiles in the 60s were in that pattern!
Also the instructions give both the American and English methods.

I have a pattern for that and was going to make one with scraps. (It's about number 5 on the list of quilts to make next!). I don't think I could sew it on a machine since the pieces are so small. A nice pattern to sit and hand stitch. Eleanor Burns has the instructions for this pattern in her book, "Egg Money Quilts". She has some lovely stories from times past in it as well. It is where I got my start on the aprons I am making as well.
