This is a fun and easy project that requires nothing but a pair of scissors, some fleece fabric, and a bit of time. This fleece blanket is a great beginner project and makes a wonderful gift for friends or family, or to make blankets to give to ministries, service projects, and charities.
Children can even make this easy-to-do blanket well supervised and helped by an adult. You can use just one color fleece, or two coordinating colors/prints for a reversible blanket!
Fabric needed: Look for microfleece or polar fleece. Since this is for a blanket, and may need laundering, look for fleece labeled as “anti-pill”. Any sort of polar or microfleece should be fine, but one marked “anti-pill” will wash without getting ratty or as worn from use. Or, if you can find it at a good price, I recommend using Malden Mills brand fleece. It is soft, cozy, and very high quality for long use.
For baby blanket or lap blanket: 2 pieces of fleece fabric, 1 yard each. Cut each piece to 36” x 36” size, smaller or larger as desired.
For throw size blanket: 2 pieces of fleece fabric, 2 yards each.
To Make the Blanket: Lay out the fabric, the two layers on top of each other, with the wrong sides together. Make sure the layers are smoothed flat and all the edges are even. Trim the edges, if needed, to make it nice and even. Pin the two layers together with a few safety pins, if needed, to help secure the layers for the next steps.
Cut a 5” square out of each corner.
Next, cut 1 1/2” wide, 5” deep strips along the edges.
Take one cut strip and separate the top and bottom fleece layer of the strip from each other, then tie them together into a knot. Continue tying each, all around. It may be helpful to cut one edge into strips and tie them before continuing to cut and tie the next edge. Remove the safety pins and enjoy your blanket!
