I'm taking Mom's old knitting machines home. One's a regular knitting machine, the other is a ribber. Mom used to make beautiful sweaters and sell them at a consignment shop. I've used the regular machine, 25+ years ago, but I'm not sure how much I remember. I don't even know what pieces and parts are still there. They are old Brother's. The one has a place you can put a punched pattern card on and run 2 colors of yarn to create a pattern. Do you want to see if you can help me figure it all out?

WooHoo Karen, that is so neat and you have a ribber too! I have always wanted a ribber, doing it by hand is a pain. I have one with the punch cards also, if Missy can't help you remember, I will. You are gonna love it maybe I'll even get mine out and set it up this fall. You have to use very thin yarn with it though, more along the lines of thread weight.

Dee! I didn't know you had one too! You can only imagine the yarn that comes with these! It'll come in handy for packing around the furniture. There is at least 2 storage tubs and 2 large trash bags. I'm hoping it will all come back to me. If not I know where to go!

Yes ma'am! ;D
Mine is a Singer and I've had it about 18 or so years now, haven't taken it out in a long time though.
You are gonna love it Karen, and with your cleverness, you will be making sweaters etc... in no time! ;D

I'll lyk when I take them out of the box. I'm guessing the ribber is the big one in the case and the regular knitter is the little one in the rifle box.
I've got (2) 17 gal (?) tubs and 4 kichen bags full of cones of yarn. The outer yarn is easy to break by hand. Do you think the yarn inside is still OK?
There are 2 beer boxes (long neck 12 packs) and 1 slightly bigger box full of patterns and such! (I've got a copier. If you're looking for it, I may have it!) Then there's another box with extra needles, weights, cleaning tools and other gizmos and gadgets.
I need to get my shelves up and get some of this stuff put away before I can get them out. I want them NOW!

Woo Hoo! I found the instruction manual and all for the knitter. It's a Knit King. Her old one must have been a Brother. I also found the "winder"! You know, the thing that makes the huge cones into manageable balls. I found all the punch cards and a package of blank ones and a Mickey Mouse that my mother drew out on graph paper.

Wow Karen, what an awesome fun thing you have. Let us see what you create. As to the easy to break yarn, Dee will have a better handle on it, but from using thread and knitting yarns, I find that if they are old they are dry rotted and not useable. Unwind them a bit and see if the breakableness(is that a word) goes all the way thru..Enjoy

I'm just guessing here Karen, but I'll bet the knitting machine is in the big box/case and the ribber is in the rifle case. My machine is in a metal case and is about 4½ feet long and VERY heavy! On the yarn, I would try Car's suggestion, sounds like dry rot to me too. I've never run across this problem, so let us know if that works. Too cool about all the goodies you found! I would be like you, heck with everything else, just get that baby set up and go to town! Yes the ball winder is a must for knitting machines, glad you found your mom's as they are expensive, around $30 I think. I've had mine for years too, since I got my big machine and use it for that and my other hand knitting yarns, especially when I get to the tail end and just have a bit left over. Wind them into a nice neat ball and stick the label into the center of it for storage. You can store a lot of those balls in 22 gal. totes, just ask me how I know? Oh forgot to tell you, Missy has an Incredible Sweater Machine like this one www.lindascraftique.com/site/bond.htm not a machine like you have. I have one of each. The ISM is for heavier hand knitting yarns, where the one you have is for thread type yarns up to fingering baby yarn.
