I love these apples, with their cute stripes. Here in Australia it is an early variety. I grew up with two of these trees, and I hope to grow one myself when we move. Apparently it is a well known apple. www.cffresh.com/fresh/gravenstein_profile.html

I hadn't heard of this variety. There are thousands of varieties of apples available, but the supermarkets in the main towns only have about 6 or 7 varieties available due to them being the popular ones. There are smaller apple growers that grow the rarer varieties, but you would probably only find them at farm stalls or small markets in more rural areas. I think the heirloom varieties are becoming more popular now for home gardeners with space for a few apple trees.
