"Green Tomato Chutney Chutney is a sweet and sour condiment, often considered to be Indian but is a British speciality dating from the colonial era. This recipe is the answer to the problem of what to do with tomatoes that refuse to ripen. Ingredients 450 Gram Cooking apples, peeled, cored and finely chopped (1 lb) 225 Gram Onions, finely chopped (8 oz) 1.4 Kilogram Green tomatoes (3 lb) 225 Gram Sultanas/Golden Raisins (BR) (8 oz) 225 Gram Demerara sugar (8 oz) 450 Gram Malt vinegar (3/4 pint) 4 small pieces Dried root ginger 1/2 Teaspoon Cayenne pepper 1 Teaspoon Mustard powder Method Makes 1.4 kg (3 lb) Put all the ingredients in a preserving pan. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer gently for 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until everything is tender, reduced to a thick consistency and no excess liquid remains. Remove the ginger, spoon the chutney into preheated jars and cover at once with tight vinegar-proof tops." From: www.greatbritishkitchen.co.uk/recipes_result.asp?name=greentomatochutney

I am trying to find "our" recipe to make some on the weekend. We have been trying to do this for awhile now. We have the jars, and an early frost means we have the tomatoes available to pick. No polenta for this years fried green tomatoes though, there wasn't any in the shop two weeks ago, maybe I will be lucky this time.
I ordered 2kg of onions, hope I have enough, I will have to dig out the recipe.

I think all the people from our childhood used either Sausetta or Easisauce so it will probably taste right anyway. We will get more turmeric and onions in the morning, silly me forgot the ordered onions won't be here until Tuesday. Yesterday I got the polenta/cornmeal when I went shopping out of town. DH loves fried green tomatoes.

We have done two batches now. I did one and dh did one. We have finished the tomatoes. My Mum suggested we only do half the recipe on the Wild's Ezy Sauce bottle as otherwise you get too much to handle. We had an ancient bottle of it and it was still OK. I have found since that the new bottles have no recipe for green tomato pickles so we are keeping our old label, lucky I kept the bottle, with notes written on it. DH reckons you could even do away with the Ezy Sauce and it would still be OK. He ran out of curry powder and when he got home from the shop he found he had bought Madras hot! Then he tasted both raw curry powders to see how much hotter it was eww!! Basically we sliced green tomatoes and onions. I learnt not to leave the onions in halves as they are too long to get into the jars quickly. Then you salt it down for the night. The next day there is liquid. You boil it with sugar. Later you add things like mustard and curry. The main cost is in the onions. www.ozchat.net/pboard/display. asp?messageNo=4&threadID=8141 - 8k - I will check this site later when it comes back online.

I had no idea you could buy green tomato pickles commercially in Australia. But Masterfoods make it which would make sense as it was popular when I was small. You just can't buy it here where I am, but now I know I will keep my eye out for it. We have 12 jars of our own though, but maybe a bought one would be fun. www.masterfoods.com.au/products/relishes.aspAt the bottom of the page is some recipes using it and ideas.
