good article, br. I don't dumpster dive but I know folks who do and find the best things. It is amazing here in the states how much people waste that is still good. I am hoping that here in Kentucky, that free cycle will catch on.

I can't bring myself to do this, but I have a funny story about it. When I was in college I worked at Kroger (grocery store). For a while I worked nights and went to school during the day. There was another female who worked on the stock crew. She had to throw some out of date spices out one night and so I went with her when she opened the back door to put them in the dumpster.
It was relly late (or early) like 1 or 2 AM. She had a good pitching arm, so she stood just inside the back door and pitched them into the dumpster. She made it, and all of a sudden we heard "OUCH!!!!!". Some guy was going through the dumpster and got whacked on the head with a can of spices.
So, if you dumpster dive, be ware of falling spices!

Lol, Cheryl, what a funny story! Who was more surprised, you two or the fellow who had the spice bottle land on his head?? I can't bring myself to do this either, but did read an article yesterday in a local magazine. The young woman who wrote the story said that she finds a couple of hundred dollars worth of food and goods a week on her regular expeditions! I will confess that a few years ago dh and younger ds were walking home from the shops and found a bed in a skip (a small dumpster for building rubble). It came out of the old house of an elderly fellow who'd passed away. I cleaned, sanded and re-finished it, and ds has been sleeping on his free, king-single size oak bed ever since.

Wow MV - what a lovely find! The only thing I ever got out of the trash was one of those giant stuffed dragon things they have in the kids section of the library. Our library was throwing it away because one foot was missing. Alas, it is still in the garage awaiting my attention.
And as for the guy in the dumpster - he scared the snot out of us!!!!! LOL!

To establish a "formal" one, I think you need to sign up at www.freecycle.com
