Is talking about money with friends and family taboo topics for you?
Do you discuss things such as salary, how much you spent, if you bounced a check, how much you have saved?
Do you feel it's private?

I guess everyone is different.......we aren't very comfortable discussing actual figures with anyone, but we do talk about the rising costs of living and that sort of thing.

In our family especially my sister-in-law and I always call each other when we get deals. Both of us might be considered misers in our families. It's like a game with us to see how much we can save or almost get free. She lets me know when there are good sales and visa virsa. We don't mind talking about our finances to each other. I would never ask anybody about their finances unless they wanted to share it with me.

We only discuss exact figures in private. So I would have to say that for the most part it is taboo to speak of it openly. I have on occassion mentioned that I forgot to write down something and am worried about having one turn to rubber. but other than that it's a no no.

We stopped discussing money 12 years ago, when we felt completely controlled by Pierre's parents.....we keep money matters very private now.

We discuss finanances with both sets of parents, since we help them both with money, housing, medications, etc. I feel they need to know exactly what our limits are- and we need to know that their needs are taken care of.
I discuss vague finances with my brother - I did manage to convince him to start a retirement fund (he's 50 years old, for Pete's sake, and had $0 in retirement).
I refuse to discuss fianances with my sister-- she blows through money like water, whines because she's overdrawn her checking account, etc.
Just yesterday, she laughingly said something to the effect of 4 minus 15 is negative 11. My mom said that is wasn't possible in the context of what we were discussing, and my sis's answer was , well it's possible, cause when she has $4 in checking and writes a check for $15, she's $11 in the red. My answer to that, was if I had only $4 in checking, I'd NOT write a check for $15, and I'd still have $4. She got all mad at me, screamed that I wouldn't think that way if my kids were going hungry. . . yada, yada, yada. Thankfully, the phone rang and we stopped the discussion.

Is it still difficult to talk about finances with your family?
