By a brilliant coincidence, Br, I'm reading a book a friend lent me last week called..."Affluenza" by Clive Hamilton, with Richard Denniss. The subtitle is "When too much is never enough".
"Our houses are bigger than ever, but our families are smaller. Our kids go to the best schools we can afford, but we hardly ever see them. We've got more money to spend yet we're further in debt than ever before." - part of the blurb on the back.
Clive Hamilton is an economist, and director of the Australia Institute, who also wrote "Growth Fetish". I am enjoying this book, which is not as dry as you may think.
We live in an area where every second person has all the sort of trappings of wealth that make my eyes roll, so this book is very much in line with my philosophy on life.

Isn't this the truth. More stuff.....Do you all yearn for simplicity. I didn't in my younger years but as I age I want more and more to have a simple life.
Good topic ladies

I can't even comprehend we dh and I talk about people's new large houses the fact that not very many people live in them, as 7 of us live here. It is like a different world to me.

Miss Viloet, I have this book! I read it 2 years ago and found very, very interesting! Here's a web site related to Afluenza. I think you might find it interesting. Lots of information. There use to be a show called like this, too. www.pbs.org/kcts/affluenza/show/show.html

Linda, I understand you. We also have a very small house. Everyone wonders how we can live 6 in this house. I think we have plenty of space--well, ok, sometimes I wish we had an extra room, but I wouldn't buy another home and get more dept just for one extra room. And what i noticed here, alot of familis have huge houses, in the town we live and you know what?---during the day....these houses are empty....everyone is working. Nice big houses with nice big porches but no one to enjoy them.... how sad is that?... Oh and it doesn't have to do with houses, but I remember when the boys were babies and todlers....I would go to the park everyday.....and those too were empty during the week days. No onter kids and moms but me....sometimes we'd get lucky and meet another sahm.... Oh well, I rather have less stuff and more time with my family.

Good points, Lucie, about the empty parks and houses. People seem to miss the point about life being about relationships, not stuff. Besides, I don't like dusting lol.
I think some people want to give their kids everything but their time.

I think some people want to give their kids everything but their time. You're right about this. And it's so sad...
