Deana and Steve are both looking for ways to make money. Deana hasn't have ANY luck with getting a job, even though she's applied at over 40 places, in various towns. . and has work experience. Steve can't drive yet, so he's limited to just Palmyra, which has NOTHING for teens.
So-- any ideas of what they can do? Here's some of their ideas:
Birthday party organizers/hostess. . . plan, decorate, do the games, and clean up. . parents are responsible for food.
Singing candy grams- nothing risque' of course. . but they both have beautiful voices and Steve can play a good guitar. . . Deana could provide the transportation.
Sewing cloth diapers for sale locally or on ebay. . these seem to be a hot item currently.
Taking pictures of local areas and making notecards, checkbook covers, calendars. . .
So what do you think? Any other ideas. . remember, we are pretty remote, and the area has limited customer base.

I have forgotten how big Palmira is. We have 1,000 here and our son put his name down packing shelves. Another boy got a job ahead of him and after talking to them he got a job too. Our next son is about the right age now, and he wants us to start helping him to get a job too.

How about babysitting/nanny services?
Pet sitting for people on vacation?
Landscaping?
Sorry I can't come up with more; good luck to them, I remember how hard it was for me to find a job at that age.

Palmyra is less than 800 people. . . only one small grocery store (where Marty used to work) and they hire only 2 people. . . one restaraunt that hires only family members. . . .one car dealership whose owner has been convicted of sexual misconduct with a minor. . . some faming jobs, if you can get to the farms. . . Babysitting is always possible, but most people hire family members. Deana will be placing an ad for housecleaning. . . my MIL does this and has had to turn down jobs due to her poor health (Deana has helped her in the past on days off from school, so she'd even have references).

Yes, I remember that age too. I didn't work when I was at school but after that it was really hard. My first real job I got in the city from writing to book publishers, can you beleive it?
We are lucky I guess, we have a seed factory as well. Is there any fruit picking?

In our old hometown which is large, 20,000 kids worked for the butcher and bakery and cafe, doing things like moving boxes etc. and sweeping. When we were in another small town, there was work at the garage pumping petrol, but there were heaps of tourists. DS did one night at the restaurant, again, tourists, but was sick that night and wasn't asked back. He did however clean up the school grounds and they paid $10AU and that really helped him out.

At Deana's age all I did was house clean and babysit too.
How about tutoring for younger kids? If she has her lifesaving certificate she could work at a local pool. I'm sure you have lots of elderly shut ins that could use a companion or someone to run errands for them. Pet sitters around here are in very short supply, so that may be an option too. I hate sending my kids to a kennel for boarding.
Anyone need help sorting and pricing for a yard sale? I don't have kids to watch and found this a huge job to do all by myself.

Yes, there are lots of kids who work at the pool in summer here. Great ideas Deed!

Sounds like they'll need to do a little of everything, given the size of the town.
You've got some great ideas here.
I can't relate to that problem as we live in a city of over three million!
