Tracking finances is a good thing to do, with some saying that every cent should be accounted for. At various times I've kept a detailed notebook and am about to start doing it again. It not only provides a clear picture of spending patterns, it helps to make purchasing a conscious decision, rather than a grab now, think later process. I'm not in the latter category, but would like to be able to discuss with family members where our spending leaks are.

I have a large book. It lasts a really long time then I get another one. One page is for a fortnight or two weeks.
When I get a bill I write down the details. I used it once to find out our average amount of bills for the two weeks once and put that aside, but haven't done that so much lately, although I do average out some expenses.

I'm writing down EVERYTHING in the notebook, Br, except bills which have their own big book. Every time I shop or buy milk and bread, or hand out another $7 in parking money or or or....I want all the little details for a couple of weeks at least. It makes it easier to organize a realistic budget for the next year. Also, to say no!

kinda sorta....we pay for everything using checks. We don't keep alot of cash on hand, it just too tempting for us to spend. So my dh keeps a very detailed book for expenses, checks numbers and amounts, etc.

I think I used to put in that kind of detail. I should be doing that with the grocery now to get a realistic picture of it. We go out for food usually a couple of extra times, ie out to the IGA for milk and soap powder. This is the first time I haven't actually known how much groceries are costing me. I try to keep the cash down too. Last night the girls washed the car for pocket money, then I have to promise to go to the bank and get the money out. I wish the atm gave out $10 notes, rather than $20.
