It's a vexed question for parents, because if you are fulfilling the wants of your children, the wants can go on forever! A quick check on an Australian forum showed amounts spent per child varied from $100 to $1000. We know one family who spend even more than that. Some folk take the attitude that everything bought towards the end of the year, including the seasonal wardrobe, should count as part of Christmas. I tend to think that Christmas should be placed in a separate category, where the kids are given a gift or gifts, but that it's not as important as their own birthday in terms of gifts. Christmas, of course, isn't their personal special day. I also don't like the idea of throwing a heap of gifts at children at Christmas time because it divorces the meaning so totally from what it should be about.

In the last two years things have gotten more expensive around here. I have had two disasters and had to buy a third present, luckily things were alot cheaper just a couple of days before Christmas.
