Life and budgets don't always work so well together.
This year, I started my money jar early. Every $2 coin that came into my hands would go in a tin in my wardrobe. I counted $40 last week, which was fantastic. Until ds asked for parking money for work because he's really broke this week. Then dd mentioned she had no money left, and could she please have $4 to go out for coffee with a friend.
I could have said no, but instead was grateful the money was there. But somehow (can you see a pattern here?) any money I have seems to drip away in small amounts...

I can really relate. I started one of those last year and it seemed I had to keep dipping into it just to make the grocery money work for the week.

I get very little coins collected, but the ones that I do keep do come in handy a couple of days later. I tend to use eftpos alot. There is no cash out here, which is very annoying sometimes, because then you have to get a $20 note from the atm which can be too big for what the kids want. I had to borrow ds's stash today. He lent it to me for one day. I need around $4 as well. Sometimes I have ds email me for small amounts. I usually pull money from saving for other things, though not too much, I don't trust myself.

Good point about the teller machines and the $20 note, Br. Nothing worse than a child needing $7.50 for an excursion, or $12 to go to a movie, or whatever, and you only have access to a $20. I used to keep a stash of $2 coins and $5 notes, only about $20 worth, for those occasions, but like cupcake it always ended up being spent on groceries!
