My younger ds, now 20, loves new things. He's like his mother in that respect - always wanting to keep up with what's newer and better. However, while I like to know what's going on, I rarely buy anything.
He called me one day a couple of months ago from where he was working, to "ask" me whether he should buy a new mobile phone. I use the word "ask" loosely as he'd already made up his mind.
Anyway, I pointed out that his phone was the latest and greatest from only a couple of months before, and that he really needed to think carefully about how much money he was prepared to waste every single month on a mobile/cell phone.
I did ask whether the phone was fabulous, and if it was fabulous enough to pay for it each month, but he could only see that it was something new.
He regretted his purchase before the month was up, and has since sold both his good phones and is paying out his contract so that he has no ongoing repayments.
Hope he remembers this for a long time. It's a good mistake to make while young, if it has to be made at all.

I think no overheads is a good thing. I do have a contract with Austar, but for me I think the time will go quickly.
