Do you dress up your entry to make guests feel welcome?
I have a phone near the front door with notices over the top. I would rather move it to the other wall, but I am not sure it would work.
Do you feel a bookcase is suitable for an entry?
Other ideas?

I think that walking into a cluttered hall makes the whole house feel cluttered. However I do live in the real world lol. I've seen bookshelves look nice in an entry, but not if it's packed full of books - maybe some empty shelves with decorative stuff. In our hall, there's a wooden framed, oval mirror to the left of the front door. Under that is a simple, half round timber table. On that is a rather stylish cricket trophy. Around it is either polished wood, rarely, or more usually whatever junk has to be taken to the library, put back in the car, or returned to someone. At the end of the hall, facing the front door is an old hall stand, which is often covered in hats and caps and car keys and scarves - not to mention umbrellas, and a basket containing the kids Raggedy Ann/Andy dolls and a wooden car. Dressed up means tidied, ugliest stuff hidden and a big vase of flowers on the hall stand.

My entry is dressed up with a ton of shoes greeting us right as you open the door. lol ..oh and a few skate boards, too.... Seriously, our entrance is not as pretty as I wish. But I am not losing hope. I want to make it nice sometime soon.

Well, my entryway says "there are 2 little girls that live here!" You come directly into my living room, and see the stairs on the right, living room, then dining room on the left. The whole entry is very open. I have an open walkway upstairs, so you can even see that. No way to make mine uncluttered.

My entryway is very large, goes off into the living area, up the stairs and also down the hall.
Right now we are re plastering the walls, but it will be a light sagey green. The border will have hearts hung from pegs and they say, welcome, blessings, love and friends.
I will put up some family photos in old windows that I made into frames...I have an antique coat rack for in there and I took an old oak board that was used to build this home with and I am putting old antique door knobs on it for hanging things and at the bottom of the door knobs will be antique small rail road nails for hanging also..(I am in love with old hardware) can you tell?
There will be a rug on the floor in front of the door. The door windows will be open as they are high and you can see in so no curtains. I hope when you open my front door it will say Welcome, love lives here.
No clutter in that entryway, but I can't guarantee what you might find in the back entryway..Ugh..
I like an entryway to be welcoming but say * people, especially children *LIVE* here.

That sounds warm and welcoming, Cara.
I don't really have an entry...the front door opens right into the living room. But if I had one, you betcha' I'd dress it up!

My entry sounds like caras without the stairs. Alot of room is taken up with a built in cupboard. I do have an antique coat rack. There is a plaster wall behind the bookshelf we could hang it on. So many walls are not plaster. Hmmm. Thanks cara.

BTW shaker pegs to me would be a dream come true. They are not so available, although maybe Ikea have them. Not here though.

I like to decorate my entryway for the seasons too.
Br, we can buy shaker pegs in various sizes unfinished here at Wal*Mart. I would be happy to pick some up for you if you like.
