SAN DIEGO (AP) - A Marine recruit died after collapsing during a two-mile run Thursday at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot - the second death this week at the West Coast training base.
The private, whose identity was not disclosed pending notification of next of kin, was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8:30 a.m. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.
The private was the 8th recruit to die during training at the base since 2000, according to spokesman Maj. Joseph Kloppel.
On Monday, a 30-year-old Marine drill instructor died during water survival training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Staff Sgt. Andrew J. Gonzales, a native of Brazoria, Texas, was one of 12 students in a two-week water survival course for instructors. He had just finished a rescue exercise when he became unresponsive. The cause of death was drowning, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office.
Kloppel said there was no relationship between the two incidents.

How awful! I hope they take better precautions and make sure the troops stay well hydrated. Denise, I know you are worried, but your son has a good head on his shoulders thanks to you his parents.
